HOW TO LAYER YOUR SKINCARE

SKINCARE CAPSULE - the best way to apply skincare

How to layer your skincare - the best way to apply skincare

I'm very excited to be back after a few months being MIA. If you are following on Instagram then you know the reason why. I'm obviously starting with sharing more about skincare here because to be honest, I'm obsessed with it. Taking care of my skin from inside out is truly a passion. Skincare has evolved so much in the last few years. New active and powerful ingredients, a bunch of new brands, natural and organic products. Trust me, I get it, you kind of get lost in all of this. Not knowing which products to use or mainly, in which order to apply them. Today, I wanted to address the latter.

CLEANSER

The very first step to get rid of impurities, deep clean your skin for the next steps. Some people opt for a double-cleasing, meaning using both an oil cleanser then a regular one ( gel or foam ). You just want to make sure to choose a cleanser that is good for your skin type. Some of my favourites cleansers are: the Soy Face Cleanser from Fresh, Tata Harper's Nourishing Oil Cleanser and Dermalogica's Special Cleansing Gel.

EXFOLIANT

Exfoliating will gently remove dead skin cells and allow a better absorption of your products by your skin. The result, a glowy and plumped skin. It is generally recommended to exfoliate once a week or every other week if you have sensitive skin. There are mainly two ways to exfoliate. A physical one  meaning that your exfoliator has particles that will do their work  as you manually exfoliate your skin. A chemical exfoliation is done through exfoliators that have AHAs ( Alpha Hydroxy Acids ) or BHAs ( Beta Hydroxy Acids ).One exfoliant I've been obsessed with lately is the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. It's a rice-based powder which activates when in contact with water. It's gentle enough for a daily use and contains Papain, Salicylic acid and enzymes which will clean your skin perfectly.

TONER

A toner will make sure to remove all the remaining dirt and impurities left behind in the previous step. It will help balance your pH level as well. Some of my favourite toners are from Dr Hauschka, Fresh and Thayers.

MASK

Masking is like indulgence for my skin. I usually mask three times a week targeting different concerns: hydration, decluttering pores etc. Some of my current favs are: Jet Lag from Summer Fridays, Fresh's Rose Face Mask, Burt's Bees Detoxifying Clay Mask.

ESSENCE

This step is getting more attention now on this side of the Atlantic, however, it's an essential step in K-Beauty.. Ever since I've added it to my skincare routine, I've been very happy about it. What does an essence do? Think of it like a toner but way more nourishing and something that will help prep your skin for the next steps.

SERUM

The serum is absolutely necessary in your skincare routine. A serum will treat and target your skin concerns: hydration, dullness, wrinkles etc. The good news is that you can definitely layer your serums.

EYE SERUM

You might be wondering, humm, eye cream! Is it really worth investing in it? My short answer would be YES! The ski around your eyes is the thinnest and it's important to nurture and take good care of that area. You'll notice that your eyes are actually the first part of your skin to age ( hello dark circles, wrinkles etc … ). In my opinion the earlier you start integrating eye cream in your skincare, the better. I usually apply my eye cream after my serum.

MOISTURIZER

Now, onto moisturizing. You can either moisturize with a cream, use an oil, or use a moisturizer and an oil after. A few favourites are Dermalogica's Skin Smoothing Cream and Fresh's Rose Face Deep Hydration Face Cream.

SPF

Humm, I've talked so many times about the importance of SPF, you can read my post here about sun protection. In the long run, using a SPF will not only have a huge impact on the aging of your skin, but it also helps to prevent skin's health issues such as cancer.
